SQL Azure database is a great way to extend data to smartphones, tablets, and devices. You can already do this with Windows Phone 7. Scott Klien, co-founder of Azure training and consulting firm Blue Syntax Consulting, has written a basic walkthrough article on his blog about how to get the two systems to talk to one another. These are the types of blog posts I like. It does a good job of walking you through the basics of a technology, with code samples and screenshots.
