PDC2008 is over, and what a week it was! There is a lot to recap, and over the next few weeks we will be expanding upon all of the new offerings. Check back often for news and information about Live Services and the new Live Framework. In the meantime, here are some of the big PDC events involving Live Services.
Ray Ozzie, Chief Software Architect, announced the Azure Services Platform in his opening keynote. The Azure Services Platform (Azure) is an internet-scale cloud services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services that can be used individually or together.
John Richards explains the Azure Services Platform diagram and touches upon the role of Live Services in this blog post: "Live Services are marquee building block services within the Azure Services Platform for handling user data and application resources."
You can find out more about the Azure Services Platform and sign up for the Community Technology Preview (CTP) at www.azure.com.
On Tuesday, David Treadwell, VP of Live Services, introduced the Live Services and the Live Framework in his keynote and this blog post:
Live Services, .Net Services, SQL Services, CRM Services and SharePoint Services make up the building block services layer that sits above Windows Azure. Each building block service provides compelling and unique services that can be used to build rich solutions. All the building block services are "composable," meaning that you can pick and chose which of them you want to use in your solution. Live Services plays an essential role and we're enhancing it with new capabilities that enable web data and services to be directly accessible on PCs and phones.
The Live Framework makes all these services easily accessible via an open, standards-based interface. Check out our new pages on http://dev.live.com/liveframework/ to learn more about the Live Framework SDK and CTP.
We've put together a full list of Live Services sessions with links to session videos. You can learn all about Live Services, the Live Framework, and the new Azure Services Platform.
Or go directly to Channel 9 and browse through all videos related to Live Services and the Azure Services Platform. Besides the PDC sessions, you'll find fun projects like Ori Amiga's Mesh Mobile, a Mesh-aware in-car automation system that Ori built using the Live Framework and Live Mesh.
We'd like to point out a few videos in particular that go into some detail about Live Services and the Live Framework.
The Windows Live ID team announced support for OpenID and released a CTP of the Windows Live ID OpenID Provider.
Beginning today, Windows Live ID is publicly committing to support the OpenID digital identity framework with the announcement of the public availability of a Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the Windows Live ID OpenID Provider. You will soon be able to use your Windows Live ID account to sign in to any OpenID Web site! The Windows Live ID OpenID Provider (OP) enables anyone with a Windows Live ID account to set up an OpenID alias and to use that alias for identification at an increasing number of OpenID 2.0 relying party sites-for example: Plaxo, Pibb, StackOverflow.com and Wikispaces.
Read more on the Windows Live ID team blog.
The Identity Services team announced two releases in this blog post on Tuesday: The Microsoft Federation Gateway (full release) and the Microsoft Services Connector (CTP).
The Microsoft Federation Gateway is a federation hub that recognizes and brokers an organization's identities for use across disparate applications and services. Based on open standards, the hub can work with any identity provider. To make it seamless for existing Active Directory customers to adopt applications and services, we've built a free, downloadable server component called the Microsoft Services Connector (MSC) which connects on-premises Active Directory-based identities with Microsoft services (through the Microsoft Federation Gateway).
PDC2008 may be over, but this is just the beginning for us. Here at dev.live.com, we've refreshed our website with a new look and easier navigation, but there's much more to do. Stay tuned!
As always, we'd appreciate your feedback. Send your comments to devlivfb@microsoft.com. Thanks!
