May 7, 2025Hey there, Insiders! Whether you’re out of school or looking to get away from work for a bit, there’s maybe no better time to plan a vacation than summer. And Microsoft Copilot can make trip planning a piece of cake with suggestions tailored to your ideal getaway scenario. Here’s how to go about drafting prompts that generate the best advice for you, your family, and other travel companions.
Gather ideas based on your interests
If you tell Copilot what kind of vacation you’re looking for, all the way down to what you want to eat or do, or even how much you want to spend each day, it can spur ideas you maybe hadn’t considered – or further confirm the place you wanted to visit is the perfect choice!
Sample prompt
I want to go on a week-long trip by myself to somewhere warm. What affordable places do you recommend that are within a 5-hour flight from New York and safe for a solo woman traveler?

Create a fool-proof itinerary
So, you know where you want to go, but you’re completely stuck on what to do once you get there. Copilot can provide a detailed itinerary incorporating your preferences and injecting some fun and relaxation.
Sample prompt
I’m planning a 3-day trip to London, England, in June. Make me an itinerary that avoids main tourist spots, and includes lunch and dinner recommendations under $100 a person per day.

Find hotels, flights, and more
Finding accommodations and booking flights can give anyone a headache. Delegate this tedious task to Copilot – just share when you want to leave or come back, and what kind of place suits your interests, and it’ll offer up plenty of options.
Sample prompt
I’m traveling to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with my wife, 3-year-old, and 7-year-old in July. What are the best hotels for us to stay in that cost less than $500 a night?

Tips and tricks
Keep these tips in mind as you draft your own Copilot prompts for a summer getaway:
- Be specific: Instead of asking, “Where should I travel in August?” you could ask, “What are the best places to travel to in August as a married but childless couple?”
- Provide context: Copilot can tailor its responses to the type of writing or style you want to emulate: “Give me a casual overview of the nightlife in Las Vegas.”
- Ask clear questions: Instead of a broad question like, “What are the best airlines?” try, “What are the best airlines for traveling with a dog or cat?”
- Break down complex requests: If you have a multi-part question, break it into smaller parts: “First, can you suggest 3-5 places to travel for a family of four in the United States? Then, can you provide a short itinerary for each place if we stayed for 4 days?”
- Specify desired format: If you need a list, summary, or detailed explanation, mention that: “Can you provide an itinerary for a 7-day trip to Egypt in bulleted form?”
- Indicate your preferences: Let Copilot know if you have a preference for the type of information or tone: “Can you create a funny itinerary for a weekend away for a friend’s bachelorette party in Asheville, North Carolina, to share with the invitees?”
- Provide examples: If you’re looking for creative ideas, give an example of what you like: “I’d love to do a trip like the book ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ – can you create an itinerary similar to that?”
- Ask follow-up questions: If Copilot’s initial response isn’t quite what you need, ask a follow-up question to narrow down the information: “Can you give more details about the Musee d’Orsay in Paris?”
- Be patient and iterative: Sometimes it takes a few tries to get the perfect response. Feel free to refine your prompt based on the initial answers you receive.
Safe travels and have an amazing trip!
