Technology enables a leading firm to do what it does best
Mike Morse Law Firm is not your traditional legal practice. Throughout their 30 years, the firm has recognized that doing things differently can create a competitive edge. This forward-thinking approach has helped the firm become the largest personal injury practice in Michigan, with a team of approximately 50 attorneys.
While the legal industry debates the disruptive potential of AI, Mike Morse is already leveraging it, using tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot to improve both the speed and quality of client service.
Law has historically been a very human-intensive profession. From discovery interviews and depositions, to researching case law, building strategies, and navigating negotiations and appeals – the road to verdicts and settlements can be long and costly.
And while some elements of the legal process cannot be automated or sped up, Mike Morse has identified ways to use AI to turn time-consuming tasks into opportunities for greater efficiency and better outcomes.
“We’ve also always been cutting edge with technology to make cases go better and faster.”
– John Nachazel Jr., Appellate Attorney, Mike Morse Law Firm
Copilot provides a valuable boost in efficiency and productivity
It’s no secret running a successful law firm involves a massive amount of paperwork and documentation. From briefs to depositions, to case law research and reviews, and a constant stream of internal and client correspondence, you can see why the legal process has a reputation of being slow and costly.
Recognizing this, leadership at Mike Morse was clear about the benefits of using technology like Copilot to accelerate case resolution. And while Copilot proved its value with quick and accurate meeting summaries, which is a huge time saver for attorneys and staff alike, the firm didn’t stop there. They quickly began using their versatile AI assistant for:
- Document creation and editing: In law, words matter, a lot. The way something is written can have a profound impact on people’s lives and case law for years to come. Copilot helps draft and refine legal documents, making them clearer, more precise, and more persuasive.
Use Copilot to quickly help improve the grammar, readability, and persuasiveness of your documents.*

“Digital transformation, particularly when it comes to Copilot and AI, is getting the mundane out of the way of human work. (Copilot) is in the tools we use every day, which is going to increase our productivity and efficiency.”
– John Georgatos, Chief Information Officer
Copilot can facilitate knowledge-sharing of case law and strategies for success
When building case strategy, legal teams can spend countless hours poring over case law, analyzing outcomes, and crafting arguments to persuade courts and juries. Mike Morse Law Firm recognized an opportunity to help its legal teams to work smarter and deliver better results for their clients, using Copilot to democratize information and training in areas like:
- Information retrieval: Copilot can search document repositories in SharePoint to find relevant information, saving time and improving efficiencies related to research and knowledge sharing.
Save time by using Copilot to search through large numbers of documents on a SharePoint for specific content, authors, dates, etc.
- Information synthesis: Copilot helps attorneys quickly query and summarize large volumes of legal content, from lengthy documents to multiple cases. Copilot helps identify key points and relevant information, saving time and helping ensure the most important aspects of each document are understood.
Use Copilot to perform a detailed comparison of multiple documents and share the analysis in an easy-to-consume format.
- Training: To support its strong growth, the firm has emphasized hiring, training, and retaining top talent. As another point of differentiation, Mike Morse developed an extensive training program from scratch, using Copilot to create guides, process documentation, training video scripts, graphics, and more.
Copilot is great sparking creativity or bringing your ideas to life. Use Copilot to develop creative content such as graphics, presentations, and detailed video scripts.
“Throughout the course of developing, creating, implementing our full learning management system – which is a very unique thing for a law firm to have – we used Copilot to help us develop content such as slides, graphics, outlines, scripts, etc.”
– Jennifer Harvala, Chief Learning Officer
Copilot provides security governance that protects sensitive client information
Every day, attorneys at Mike Morse Law Firm work with clients’ medical records, salary information, criminal histories, and more. Protecting sensitive information isn’t just critical to the attorney-client relationship, it’s also the law. That’s why the firm relies on Copilot’s responsible AI practices to ensure neither productivity nor privacy are compromised.
Copilot helps safeguard client data through:
- Data security and compliance: Copilot adheres to existing privacy, security, and compliance commitments to Microsoft 365 customers, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and European Union (EU) Data Boundary.
- Data handling and permissions controls: Data used to generate responses is processed by Microsoft pursuant to contractual data handling requirements, including being encrypted in transit, helping safeguard privacy and prevent leakage. In addition, Microsoft 365 data, including Microsoft Graph and SharePoint, adheres to access control and auditing mechanisms.
- Data loss prevention: Copilot respects existing data loss prevention (DLP) policies to prevent data exfiltration of Copilot-generated responses. Additionally, it enhances data security by applying sensitivity labels to these responses.
- Privacy in AI model training: Prompts, responses, and data accessed through Microsoft Graph are not used to train foundation LLMs, including those used by Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Advanced AI protections: Copilot operates with multiple protections, which include filtering harmful content, detecting protected material, and blocking prompt injections.
“As attorneys, we’re bound by ethics rules to exercise reason at least reasonable, if not beyond reasonable efforts to protect our clients’ data. Medical records. Criminal history. Basically, we have our clients’ whole lives in our data and in our files. Keeping that safe is critical.”
– John Nachazel Jr., Appellate Attorney
