July 2, 2026As we launched the memory-optimized Mbv3 Medium Memory virtual machines in September 2024, customer demand for greater storage efficiency and stronger platform capabilities have continued to grow. Today, we are excited to introduce the next generation Mbv4 series—Mbsv4 and Mbdsv4—now available in public preview. This new release delivers both storage-optimized and memory-optimized configurations, combined with enhanced security features, and powered by the latest Azure Boost technologies for improved performance efficiency, enabling customers to run data-intensive and mission-critical workloads with greater confidence, scalability, and cost effectiveness.
Key features on the new Mbv4 VMs
- The memory-optimized and storage-optimized Mbv4 VM (Mbsv4 and Mbdsv4) series are based on the 6th generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, scale for workloads up to 4TB, and deliver higher remote disk storage performance
- These new VM sizes offer up to 780,000 IOPS, providing a 30% improvement in remote storage IOPs over the previous M-series families.
- These new VM sizes also offer up to 16GBps of remote disk storage bandwidth, providing a 60% improvement in remote storage bandwidth over the previous M-series families.
- The increased remote storage performance of these VMs is ideal for storage throughput-intensive workloads such as relational databases and data analytics applications.
- Improved local storage performance with up to 3,200,000 IOPS and 16GBps throughput to local NVMe temp disk which are with 20× higher IOPS and 10× greater bandwidth throughput compared to the previous generation.
- Designed from the ground up for increased resilience against failures with memory, disks, and networking based on intelligence from past generations.
- Available for the first time on the M-series, Total Memory Encryption and Trusted Launch deliver enhanced protection and a hardened security baseline—providing a trusted foundation for sensitive and mission-critical business workloads.
- Available in both disk and diskless offerings, allowing customers the flexibility to choose the option that best meets their workload needs.
